Virgin Blog

Hi there fellow bloggers. This is my first ever blog and I'm unsure of exactly what I'm doing. This blog is part of a course I am doing called New Communication Technolgy at Griffith university. It is focussed on the new technologies that comprise our modern lives, mainly from a cultural perspective. Such technologies include mobile phones (SMS, MMS etc.), social networking sites (facebook, myspace), email, IM (MSN, Yahoo etc.), Flickr (for storing photos), on-line gaming, on-line gambling, e-commerce.... the list goes on. Personally, I am not a particularly high user of techonolgy, but I certainly use it on a daily basis, email being the main culprit.

One interesting point touched on in the lecture was Malcom McLuhan who defines technology as extensions of the human body. He states 'the tool is an extension of the hand', 'the wheel is an extension of the legs', 'a book is an extension of the eye'. Our lecturer Adam made an interesting point that, due to technology, we are able to experience things that we otherwise would never be able to. For eg. we all know what the Eifell Tower looks like because of technology. We are in esscence allowed to experienced more, because of technology, than we would otherwise.

We also touched on how "the medium is the message' and the Internet is creating a convergence of mediums ie. sound, movie, animation
